Moon Viewing Party!
On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong took mankind's
first step on the moon. The 40th anniversary is a perfect time to celebrate and do a little moon viewing party!
I’d been planning my
moon party for a couple years and when time came to create the tablescape, I went right to the Christmas decorations!
Big silver mirrored gazing balls and boxes of silver stars were transformed into centerpieces. Everything
about the tables had to be symmetric and spherical, so I’m setting round tables with four place settings each!
The other musts for the tables are “shine” and “sparkle”. I’m
using silver chargers, small round mirrors, votive holders outlined with faux rhinestones. I created the
centerpieces by filling large round fishbowls with sparkling round marbles, topped them with mirrored gazing balls and hot
glued glittery silver stars around the bowl. I created little universes for each centerpiece!
The Moon Food! Our menu began with cocktails made with Tang! The moon
landing crew didn’t choose to take Tang on their flight, but since it was such a big part of the Gemini Space Program,
it fits! Simple round canapés using pepperoni and topped with rounds of Baby Swiss Cheese, complete
with craters, started the evening. Our composed salad included fresh fruits including
slices of star fruit. Many cultures celebrate the moon and actually have “moon viewing” festivals.
The yellow of the egg is thought to be a replica of the moon, so I made Pasta Carbanara, and my sauce was
rich with egg yolks. Finally, the evening ended with lots of coffee and Moon Pies!
Of course, I made my own Moon Pies and you can too! All you have to do is bake a two-layer
round chocolate cake from your favorite mix. When cool, spread marshmallow filling between the layers and
pour melted chocolate over the cake. To make the filling, whip ¾ cup margarine with 2 cups of powdered
sugar. Add a 7-ounce jar of marshmallow fluff and continue to blend. To finish the cake,
melt a bag of milk chocolate chips with a tablespoon of water in the microwave. Stir it a couple of times
and add a little more water if necessary. Gently spoon the chocolate over the top of the cake, letting
it run down the sides. The chocolate will harden and the cake should be stored in the fridge until
ready to serve it.
The Perfect Silver Moon Tablescape! The dinnerware is from my massive glass collection. The plates are Waterford
Waffle Depression Glass and the stemmed glasses are Indiana Glass Diamond Point made during the last three decades!
I made a special trip to the fabric store for the table covering and first started looking in the “prom dress”
fabrics. I just couldn’t find what I wanted and then stumbled into a bolt of light blue denim, of
all things, embellished with tiny silver stars. What could be more perfect?
